Google, Our Creepy Big Brother

My favorite thing about blogging is finding new blogs and being able to meet the amazing writers behind the blog! I am lucky enough to have Kali as a sponsor this month, and I am seriously so excited that she is guest posting for me! I read through her post today, and couldn't help but relate immediately - I feel like that all the time!

KaliwoodHey Lemon Lovers! Kali here of Kaliwood! Kenzie was nice enough to let me take over for her today!

So, is anyone else freaked out by the internet sometimes? Allow me to explain...

I'm going to my cousin's wedding in D.C. next weekend and just realized the invitation says "Black Tie Prefered". I had a moment of panic, because I have a chic cocktail dress to wear, but it's short. But, the idea of a floor-length gown was exciting! (When do you get to wear those, really?) So, I started browsing the internet for gowns.

About an hour later I was doing my usual perusing of Facebook, Twitter, Pandora, etc. And this is what I found in the ads...

Pandora:
Facebook:

Just so you know, that black sheer number from Nordstrom is a dress I was looking at during my online shopping and had clicked on.

How creepy! I felt like Big Brother is watching me! And in case I still needed a dress, but wasn't feeling that one, Facebook also offered me these throughout the day:

And they also know I'm a dog lover!

And then sometimes they get it totally wrong:

(I've been in a relationship for over a year.)
What the???

Now, I have my degree in Marketing. So trust me, I get that this is a genius method to do some targeted marketing, and to make the consumer feel as if their internet surfing is a customized experience. But still this weirds me out sometimes!

What about you?? Do you like the customization or do you think little people are watching you from inside your web cam??
~~
Thanks for stopping by today! I would love to have you visit Kaliwood. It's the best place for a little work getaway!

LOL yes, sometimes FB is WAY off. Yesterday I got one with a woman who had to weigh 500 pounds and the caption was: "Want to lose 7 pounds?" Ha ha ha.

Yep, I always feel like someone's watching. I was looking at a blog and all of the ads had to do with Bauble Bar and Harry Barker. Stores I was looking at seconds ago. Weeiirrrddd :)

Yup, I've noticed that too. It can be pretty creepy.

What really freaks me out is when I am search for things on my laptop but happen to have my work email open on it - then the next day at the office I get targeted ads on my desktop pc.

I think it's sooo creepy. I mean I get the whole, "we know you so well" speel but between the inet anticipating my every need and my creepah neighbor wanting to fulfill them I'm just all kinds of creeped out! :p - And if a very odd, misery loves company sort of way, it's comforting to know I'm not alone..

Yeah, it creeps me out as well. Having been in marketing in my last job, I get the code on how it's done, but I never click on ads even if they appeal to me, because I don't want to encourage it. Not that I need privacy for online shopping, or are totally paranoid, but it's...unsettling.

reminds me of the father who found out his daughter was pregnant because of a Target flyer she got for baby products because she went and bought a pregnancy test or something of the sorts. They're all watching you!

I just read that google picks up keywords in your emails, and I think it's crazy! What if you get a weird email and then weird/creepy ads start popping up!
